CLEO DE MERODE'S ART BACKGROUND:
Heralded as one of France's and Europe's greatest beauties, Cleo de Mérode was actually the scion of an old aristocratic German family (not actually Flemish/Belgian as is usually claimed). Cléopatra Diane de Mérode was born in France as Cléopatra Diana von Merode, the daughter of esteemed Austrian painter Karl Freiherr von Merode and a Viennese actress-singer mother. She was also a descendant of Werner III Freiherr von Merode. Although the Merode family had come to Austria via Belgium and the Netherlands, the "House of Merode" originated in Germany. They took their name from the German village of Merode in the municipality of North Rhine-Westphalia. The castle Merode still stands in Germany where it is run by the Prince and Princess von Merode. Today, the castle is open to tourist visitation. Cleo De Merode is a legendary figure in the history of the European arts. Lautrec drew her image and 61 year old King Leoplold II of Belgium was obsessed with her. An unorthodox person, she danced Ballet at the Paris Opera, but also at the scandalous Folies Bergère.

This is a very beautiful original antique German photograph on postcard stock of legendary ballet dancer Cleo De Merode. What makes this image extra special is that it focuses exclusively on Cleo’s gorgeous face with her alluring, sensual eyes that connect with her viewers. Also interesting is that this photo is marked on front by a seal of the famous historic German Musterschutz company. This is unusual because Musterschutz was known for producing the finest, most decorative picture frames, Beer Steins and other ornate décor. A signature appears beside the seal. The backside has two official stamps, one appears to have a 1904 date and the other is difficult to read. In this picture, we see the sensibilities of a classic painting.
