Presenting a Very Rare and Genuine Large-Sized Historic Antique circa 1890’s fully Painted Masonic Ritual Battle Shield. At center is a Glowing Sun of Enlightenment. Hand-Painted Masonic Shields are very special. And scarce.
It had been used for Scottish Rite (maybe also York?) in Atlantic City’s long defunct Masonic Temple. Over 25 years ago, we had a great opportunity to purchase a nice collection of Masonic items that had been used by various Lodges within the legendary Atlantic City Temple. The seller’s father had belonged to several groups there. The Shield appears to be tin. The spikes may be brass. Very old, the Shield has scratches, some color losses and surface wear. No serious problems. Over the years, there was probably some retouching done, which is a common practice (museums always retouch antique art. A most recently example is Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi”). The leather straps on back are apart. The Shield is solid and very alluring. Measures approximately 19 ½ x 13 ¼ inches. FREEMASONRY IN ATLANTIC CITY
This Masonic relic pre-dates all those gaudy Atlantic City casinos by many, many, many years. Made in the circa 1890's, it recalls an epoch in American history when Freemasonry thrived in virtually every city and town. As times have changed, sadly, many Temples and Lodges have closed down (gone dark). Unfortunately, that too was the fate of the Majestic Old Masonic Temple of Atlantic City. While its awesome looking structure still stands, the former Temple remains abandoned of tenants, and as we understand, may currently still be up for sale. It was explained to us that this Temple was forced to close for economic considerations during the 1930's and had subsequently served as the local police precinct for many years up until recently, when it was again being put up for sale. Very unfortunate indeed, as this humongous structure must be one of the most dynamic and impressive Masonic landmarks in all America. An important part of Masonic history.
