Item Description

Choose from a varied multi-variation collection of salt and pepper shakers, including complete matching pairs, individual replacement shakers and decorative novelty examples. The selection includes antique, vintage, retro and modern pieces made from porcelain, fine bone china, pottery, ceramic, glass, crystal, metal, wood, plastic and other materials. Branded and unbranded designs are available in different sizes, colours, shapes, patterns and themes. Each variation is individually named and photographed, and the images assigned to the selected option show the exact item or set supplied. Please check the variation title, images, measurements and condition details carefully before purchasing.

Item Condition

Very good vintage used condition, unless the selected variation specifically states otherwise. This multi-variation listing includes antique, vintage and modern salt and pepper shakers, ranging from complete matching pairs to individual replacement pots and novelty display pieces. The items vary considerably in age, material, manufacture and previous use, so each option should be assessed through its variation name, photographs and any accompanying notes. Appropriate signs of age may include light scratches, minor base wear, fine crazing, small firing or moulding irregularities and limited rubbing to gilding, painted details or printed decoration. Significant faults, including chips, cracks, repairs, staining, losses or missing plugs, will be identified where applicable. The photographs show the exact selected item and form an essential part of the condition report.

Manufacturer Info

Salt and pepper shakers have been produced by many of the world’s most recognised porcelain, fine bone china, pottery, ceramic, glass and crystal manufacturers, as well as makers working in metal, wood, stone, plastic and mixed materials. Leading tableware companies, specialist art potteries, studio makers and mass-market factories all adopted the form, using shakers both as practical household objects and as miniature expressions of their wider design identity. Well-known patterns, decorative motifs and signature shapes were often adapted into compact condiment sets, allowing customers to coordinate them with larger dinner services or purchase them as affordable gifts and souvenirs. Their popularity expanded significantly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as improvements in salt refining, drying and packaging made enclosed shakers increasingly practical. Before this, salt was commonly served in open cellars because it absorbed moisture and could clump inside pierced containers. Once free-flowing table salt became widely available, manufacturers began producing shakers in an extraordinary range of forms, including traditional tableware shapes, animals, people, buildings, vehicles, fruit, advertising pieces and commemorative souvenirs. This variety explains why one collection may include fine bone china beside studio pottery, pressed glass, crystal, metal or plastic. Each piece reflects the materials, production techniques, fashions and everyday customs of its period, while complete pairs and surviving single replacements remain collectable today.

Did You Know?

Salt was not always served from a shaker. For centuries it was commonly presented in open salt cellars because early processed salt readily absorbed moisture, formed lumps and blocked small dispensing holes. Improvements in refining, drying, packaging and anti-caking agents made enclosed salt shakers increasingly practical during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manufacturers quickly discovered that the compact paired format was ideal for experimentation. Familiar tableware patterns were miniaturised, while animals, people, buildings, fruit, vehicles and souvenir landmarks became functional novelty designs. This explains why one collection can combine fine bone china, studio pottery, pressed glass, crystal, metal and plastic: each pair reflects the materials, manufacturing methods and social tastes of its own period.
