This is an authentic 1850 Vatican City 10 Baiocchi coin from the Papal States, issued during the reign of Pope Pius IX (PIVS IX PON MAX AN IIII).
It comes from my grandfather’s collection — he was an antique dealer in Austria.
The obverse features the papal coat of arms of Pius IX topped by the crossed keys and tiara, symbolizing papal authority. The reverse shows the denomination “10 BAIOCCHI,” the date 1850, and the mint mark “R” for Rome.
This bronze coin represents the Papal States’ pre-unification currency, used before Italy became a unified kingdom in 1861. A must-have for collectors of Vatican, Italian States, or 19th-century European coins.
