12 Roman Bronze Coins Showcasing the Rise of Christianity in Rome - ALBUM & COA

The 300 years in between the death of Jesus Christ and the death of Constantine the Great were crucial to the rise of Christianity. What started as the experiences and beliefs of a small number of disciples and witnesses would grow to become the official religion of the massive Roman Empire.
This set includes 12 Roman bronze issues under key emperors whose actions were crucial to the story of the rise of Christianity. It begins with Gallienus who issued the Edict of Toleration, legalizing the practice of Christianity in the empire for the first time. His successor Claudius II Gothicus would reverse this decision leading to yet more persecution of Christians. Constantine I ( the Great ) was the first Christian emperor of Rome, who was converted after a vision of the cross came to him before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge telling him to mark his soldiers shields with the sign of the cross. He did so, and won. Together with Licinius I he would issue the Edict of Milan in 313, which officially gave legal status to Christianity and lifted previous persecutions. Constantine's sons would follow in their father's footsteps. By the time of the last three Emperors in this set ( Valens, Valentinian I & Gratian ) Christianity was the state religion of the Roman Empire with the Edict of Thessalonica in 380 making it law.
