This book introduces the basics of law in Papua New Guinea, and it targets upper secondary legal studies teachers and students. Everyone in this country, including the educated, other than lawyers needs to know and understand our own laws. The National Education Department's motto is "Prosperity through self-reliance"; thus, this project is one out of many the department is yet to accomplish. No recommended text was available at the time when the new course, legal studies, was introduced in 2010 to be taught as an examinable subject. Newly elevated secondary schools in the country are facing reference material problem. The problem of rare stock of resource material is truly a considerable physical and psychological stress suffered by most teachers in the country. This book was written exactly in line with Upper Secondary Legal Studies syllabus as a text material to be used across the nation in all secondary schools in which Legal Studies course is offered. The subject itself is fundamentally interesting. I enjoyed teaching law for the last six years. I gained the insights of basic introductory law while in the process of teaching and writing this book. Hope you enjoy reading this book, "Introduction to Our Laws" and gain the insights of law.
This book is purposely written as a text reference material for Papua New Guinea secondary schools, Gr.11&12 Legal studies Course. Since the introduction of this new course in 2010, there wasnt a recommended text in place. Actually after 6 years this book is published exactly in line with the legal studies syllabus. The target and audience of this book is aimed at the National Department of Education (PNG), all secondary schools, the public libraries, the college libraries, the university libraries, UPNG Law faculty and any other interested book reviewers and readers globally. This book introduces the basics of law in Papua New Guinea. Everyone in this country including the educated other than lawyers need to know and understand our own laws. Bulk of the people from both formal and informal sector, public and private servants seemed to have few ideas or nil at all about our own laws. I supported the government's initiative in the curriculum reform so that students at secondary levels appreciate the roles and functions of the laws in our society. They come to realize the importance of law, how it protects individual rights and protects society from harm, danger, trouble etc. It would be best all legal studies students in the country have a copy each of this book. I like to read this book by Dr. Eric Kwa, Constitutional Laws of PNG, (2001). However, my book would also attrack attention for those who are pursuiing further studies in the field of legal proffession. The National Education Department's motto is "prosperity through self reliance," thus this project is one out of many the department is yet to accomplish. Its interesting to read and review this book, a book by someone who is not a lawyer. Someone who hasnt studied even a single law course. In this case we say a lay person, someone who doesnt even know basics about the law. People can compare and contrast this person and a lawyer who passes out from Legal Training Institute (LTI) in Port Moresby. Its ineresting isnt it. Hope you enjoy reading this book, Introduction to Our Laws and gain the insights of law. Best Regards Mr. James Litai Author
