  • Beschreibung: Auf einem Rasenstück auf einem Stuhl sitzend, erblicken die Betrachtenden einen mondän, in der Mode des 18. Jahrhunderts gekleideten Mann mit lockiger Perücke. Eine lange Pfeife in der Hand haltend, raucht der Mann und blickt mit einem leidenden Gesichtsausdruck über seine rechte Schulter hinweg. Eine ältere Frau, vermutlich seine Bedienstete, bringt eine Schüssel mit einem dampfenden Gebräu herbei. Zahlreich Flaschen und ein aufgeschlagenes Buch zu seinen Füßen lassen den Eindruck erwecken, der Raucher versuche ein Leiden zu mildern.

  • Description: Sitting on a chair on a patch of grass, the viewers catch sight of a sophisticated man dressed in 18th century fashion with a curly wig. Holding a long pipe in his hand, the man smokes and looks over his right shoulder with a suffering expression. An elderly woman, presumably his servant, brings a bowl of steaming brew. Numerous bottles and an open book at his feet give the impression that the smoker is trying to alleviate a suffering.
