Palissy-style Majolica crab plate from Portugal.
From the Caldas da Rainha region, known for its iconic ceramic tradition.
This style, also referred to as "Palissy Ware," features three-dimensional, highly detailed representations of sea creatures like crabs, mussels, and seaweed, often on a sandy textured background.
This type of Portuguese Majolica is inspired by the work of 16th-century French potter Bernard Palissy, and saw a resurgence in popularity in the late 19th century.
Many of these plates are designed to be wall hangings, but they can also be used as decorative table pieces.
"Majolica" broadly refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in various regions, and there is indeed a history of Majolica.
