This style, also referred to as "Palissy Ware," features three-dimensional, highly detailed representations of sea creatures like crabs, mussels, and seaweed, often on a sandy textured background. This type of Portuguese Majolica is inspired by the work of 16th-century French potter Bernard Palissy, and saw a resurgence in popularity in the late 19th century. Many of these plates are designed to be wall hangings, but they can also be used as decorative table pieces.
