Charles II, born May 29, 1630, at St. James's Palace, London, and died February 6, 1685, at Whitehall Palace, London, was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1660 until his death.
He was the son of King Charles I—executed at Whitehall Palace in 1649, at the height of the First English Civil War—and Queen Henrietta Maria of France.
He was a first cousin of King Louis XIV of France, Maria Theresa of Austria, Queen of France, Elector Charles I of the Palatinate, Duke Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy, and Electress Sophia of Hanover.
