Antique Awaji pottery Arts and Crafts incised iris vase. Hand turned with hand incised decor. Irises depicted on front and back. In Japanese art and culture, the iris symbolizes strength, fortitude, protection against evil, and the warrior spirit due to its sword-like leaves and resilience in adverse conditions. Circa 1920. From the Danto pottery, successor to the Minpei kiln. Incised artist's mark (japanese character "chi" to the base). 12" high, 6" diameter. Excellent condition.
