East German Leather Greatcoat Strap- Army Surplus - Cold War 1960s - Measures 23
Some jobs in the field come down to keeping a bundle of gear from coming apart, and this leather strap was the East German army's answer to that problem. It left NVA stores after a career spent binding rolled coats, shelter quarters and blankets onto whatever a soldier was already carrying. For a collector it is a dated piece of Cold War kit; for anyone with a bedroll it is still hardware that works.
- Thick Leather Body — The strap is cut from heavy, hard-wearing leather that was expected to survive rough field use while carrying a load.
- 23-Inch Length — It measures 23 inches (58 cm) from end to end, enough to wrap around a rolled coat or a blanket.
- Roller Buckle — A single-prong metal roller buckle cinches the strap down and keeps the bundle from working loose.
- Adjustment Holes — Punched holes run along the strap so the usable length can be set to fit whatever is being tied up.
- Snap Keeper — A press-stud keeper lays the loose end flat against the strap once it has been tightened.
- Sewn Construction — It is stitched together rather than riveted, the method seen on German straps from the late war.
- NVA Stampings — The reverse side carries stamped and inked issue markings left behind by original NVA stores.
- Late-War Pattern — Its shape follows late WWII-era carrying straps, meant to fix greatcoats, zeltbahns and blankets to the tornister field pack and the Y-strap harness.
- Real Issue, Dated — These went to East German National People's Army personnel during the 1960s, with documented examples dated 1961, and they are not copies.
