History & Evolution

  • Established in 1875 with just four part-time officers to tackle issues like liquor-related crime

  • In 1900, John F. Plunkett became the first Chief of Police and laid the foundation of the modern department

  • The department is known for its Community Service Dog, Leo, a certified therapy dog who interacts with residents at schools, nursing homes, public events, and offers support during emergencies. Leo even has a mini police cruiser and business cards for public engagement!
