Old Wurkun Kundul Figure. Fine Patina. Striking, authentic, used and very old example. Superb. 48cm tall. Nigeria.

Wurkun Kundul figures are primarily carved from wood and usually have a highly abstract and columnar form reducing the human body to essential, minimal elements.

Features of the Wurkun Kundul classically display a prominent head topped by a large crest with an elongated neck leading to
a cylindrical torso with protruding navel and arms and hands connected as a single, raised ridge.

The Wurkun Kundu's radically abstract and minimalist representation of the human form has made it an iconic favourite of collectors worldwide.

Origin.
The Wurkun people who are native to the Muri Mountains in northeastern Nigeria primarily in Taraba and Gosberton State. The very name “Wurkun” meaning people of the hills.

Age.
This Wurkun Kundul is one of several authentic, and used example we obtained on recent visit to Taraba and Gombe States of Nigeria which are the home of origin, creation and ethnographic significance of these fascinating item.

This example is at least six decades old, perhaps significantly older, making it excellent value for money as a fine, used and genuine African tribal treasure.

Use.
Wurkun kundul figures are powerful, protective sculptures used by the Wurkun people of Nigeria primarily for healing, protection, communal harmony and divination.

They are usually commissioned by families who have sought a diviner's advice. Often carved in pairs, they are mounted on iron spikes or placed on pedestals in placed in homes or communal areas.
