The Seymour Unicorn Joins Tudor Beasts Collection

Great Britain’s Royal Mint continue its series of Tudor Beasts with the fifth release in the series—the Seymour Unicorn. Considered to be the strongest of all creatures, the unicorn represents innocence, purity, and fertility—qualities that King Henry VIII wanted in a wife in his efforts to produce an heir to continue the Tudor line.

Legendary Token Of Henry VIII’s Quest For A Son And Heir

This legal tender £2 (two pounds) coin was struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and shows the Seymour Unicorn, one of a procession of carefully carved Royal Beasts from myth and legend that Henry commissioned to stand at the entrance to Hampton Court Palace. Though not then recognized as a royal heraldic beast, the unicorn appealed to Henry’s outsized ego and was made specifically as a tribute to Jane Seymour, his third wife. By giving the beast to Jane Seymour, the king was signaling his hope that their marriage would be blessed with a son and heir. Jane lived up to Henry’s expectations and gave birth to his only son, the future king Edward VI. Sadly, Jane did not live long enough to see her son crowned as she died less than two weeks after she gave birth and barely a year after marrying Henry. Holding a shield emblazoned with Tudor symbols, the Seymour Unicorn has been reimagined for the twenty-first century by artist David Lawrence based on a stone sculpture at Hampton Court Palace. The coin’s obverse features the portrait of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. The coin also features an edge inscription that reads: “HAMPTON COURT PALACE – ROYAL TUDOR BEASTS.”

A Heraldic Beast From The House Of Tudor

The Seymour Unicorn stands guard along with nine other Tudor heraldic beasts that flank the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace. They were erected by King Henry VIII, who was following in the footsteps of his father, Henry VII, by making sure everyone knew it was his divine right to rule. One must also remember this occurred not too long after the War of the Roses when the House of York and the House of Lancaster waged a bloody war to determine the succession of England’s monarchy, out of which the Tudor Dynasty was born.
