The Dresdner Milchversorgungs-Anstalt (D.M.A.) was founded in 1905 by 355 milk producers, quickly becoming the largest such milk cooperative in Germany, producing 25 million liters of milk in 1911. In 1920, a large number of different small cardboard Notgeld notes were issued by the D.M.A. for its many distribution branches throughout the Dresden area.
The notes are found in the Tieste catalog, with separate entries for each branch. The notes were intended to circulate as Notgeld, and circulate they did. Being backed by such a large company and its almost universally needed commodity, they made an excellent substitute for small change. So today the notes, all of which are considered rare (some more so than others), are almost always found in circulated condition.
