Title: Informing Benjamin Silliman of his knowledge of the whereabouts of William Beaumont and his important medical research subject Alexis St. Martin, in an autograph letter, signed by Poinsett as Secretary of War, in Washington, July 31, 1840, to “Professor B. Silliman,” in part: “Dr. Beaumont is no longer in the service, but is permanently established at St. Louis Missouri. St. Martin, the subject of the interesting experiments you speak of, left him some time ago to visit his friends in Canada where it is believed in the Surgeon General’s office that he still is. Dr. Beaumont was endeavoring to induce him to return to St. Louis, but I do not positively know with what success. If you will write to him I will with great pleasure forward your letter to Dr. Beaumont.”
