DESCRIPTION

A 1917 edition of this work, in a full calf school prize binding from the Amesbury School, Bickley.

Written by siblings and poets Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807, this a retelling of the plays of Shakespeare, sensitive to the preferences of children. Mary was responsible for the prose retelling of the comedies, and Charles the tragedies. By omitting the histories, Roman plays, sexual references and subplots, the work has proven enduringly popular and never been out of print.

While it is the work of both Mary and Charles, the title page of this volume identifies only Charles's involvement.

Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and three further colour plates.

School prize inscription to a front blank, dated 1918, awarding the work to V. D. Barker.

Dated 1917 via the University of Cambridge Libraries.
