First edition.
A prose epic and apologetic work featuring Eudore, a Greek Christian, diverted from his mission by a druidess from Armorica, Velléda. The action of this "Breton novel of origins" takes place among the Riedones and explores the question of understanding a new social order.
The first twelve books feature Eudorus, the last descendant of Philipœmen a hero of Greek liberty, recounting the early years of his life up to the time of his return to Arcadia. Eudore's story depicts a long journey through Rome, the barbarian countries of the north, Armorica, the Egyptian desert, and the Holy Land.
Eudore continues his spiritual journey, leading him to the Christian religion, with the last twelve books depicting the triumph of the Christian religion under the persecution of Diocletian.
The themes explored were particularly important following the Revolution of 1789 in the light of a Christianity reconciling the freedom of individuals inherited from antiquity and the social virtues of the Christian religion.
Written by Francois-Rene, vicomte de Chateaubriand, a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian who influenced French literature of the nineteenth century.
