1893 LUTHERAN WOMANS LEAGUE COOK BOOK CHICAGO WORLD’S FAIR RECIPES, ADVERTISING
This extremely rare antique “Cook Book of The Lutheran Woman's League of Chicago and Vicinity" from 1893 has a League emblem and book title in gold gilt on royal purple textured card stock. Three staples form the spine, which has become brittle around the stapled areas and about 3 pages into the book from front and back. The book’s cover is discolored from exposure to sunlight. There is no evidence of spills, stains or water damage. All 116 pages are clean, crisp and evenly tanned. See photos. This unique book is so much more than a recipe collection! It does provide culinary practices, ingredients, techniques, tastes and advice about foods and products of the late 19th century in the Chicago area. There are many fascinating ads for everything from Kraft Cheese to Bach Brick Co. to Junket powder to banks and furniture stores.
Lutheran women chose the time and place of this publication to be part of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago where women made a significant contribution at The Women's Building. Designed by architect Sophia Hayden, it was one of the first buildings at the fair and was entirely planned, designed and decorated by women. The building housed exhibits of women's work in arts, literature, culture and education that challenged traditional gender roles as women’s activist movements arose. There were conference and meeting spaces for the Board of Lady Managers, led by Bertha Honoré Palmer, who oversaw the building's construction and management with Hayden and other groups that formed to challenge prevailing societal norms.
