DESCRIPTION

This set consists of the entire 1831 run of the Library of the Fine Arts. Eleven issues across two volumes. 

Uniformly bound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards.

This monthly magazine published critical essays on painting, sculpture, architecture and engraving, first published in February 1831 and founded by barrister James Kennedy. 

Volume I comprises Vol I. Nos 1-6 (February-July 1831) and contains essays and articles such as 'History and Process of Lithography', 'Lives of British Architects', 'New Museum at Berlin', and 'Sketches by a Travelling Architect'. 

Volume II comprises Vol. II Nos. 7-11 (August-December 1831) and contains essays and articles such as 'Painters in Water-colours', 'On Imitation', 'Dogmas on Art', and 'Miseries of a Patron'.

Volume II is also bound together with 'Discourses Delivered to the Students of The Royal Academy' by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1831).

With a frontispiece and four engraved plates to Vol I and a frontispiece and two engraved plates to Vol II. Collated, complete against an identical copy at Hathi Trust.


CONDITION

Uniformly bound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, front hinge failed to Vol I. Spine to Vol II is coming away to the front joint, with front board at risk of detaching with further handling. With moderate rubbing to the extremities. Internally, contents page and frontispiece to Vol I is detached, but present, otherwise firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with majority of scattered spotting concentrated to the first and last few leaves. Ink inscription to both title pages.
