Use.
Ibibio masks are used for social control, ancestor reverence, and spiritual communication. They serve as a powerful tool for maintaining order, enforcing laws, and connecting with the spirit world.

Description.
Striking, authentic and rare Ibibio wood face mask with two faces and a small child surmounted to the rear area.

Main face of mask has cut-outs for eyes and mouth. Above that is the Head of an Antelope, with small embedded wooden teeth, that is a revered animal in Ibibio culture.

Striking patination, lustrous to most parts, with Kaolin contrast stains. Mask is a large and visually prominent example at 54cm tall.

Mask is an old and well-used example and therefore has visible cracks, which are stable, and some areas of local vegetative repair I believe adds to the charm of this fascinating mask.

Overall, the mask is a genuine and valuable example of an Ibibio mask in good collector condition overall.

An African tribal treasure that will be a fine purchase and a complement to any collection in our opinion.
