Welcome to Pioneer
Fossils!
A Certificate of
Authenticity, which has a color photo of the exact item you purchased on it,
will accompany the specimen. Plus a free "floating" display stand.
Apatosaurus (meaning
"deceptive lizard"), one of the larger members of the clade called
Sauropods, roamed over some areas in western North America during the Jurassic
Period, about 151 million years ago. It could grow to 75 feet in length. This
specimen is from the Morrison Formation in western Colorado.
It was named
"deceptive lizard" because some of its bones were originally confused
with Mosasaur bones.
Years ago, this might
have been called Brontosaurus, a name which stayed around until 1903, when it
was then decided Brontosaurus was the same as Apatosaurus. However, in 2015,
the name Brontosaurus was resurrected as scientists identified distinct differences
between the two. These pieces are from an Apatosaurus.
Here is a genuine fossil piece of bone from an Apatosaurus. It measures about 1.87" using calipers (47.6 mm.). It weighs 1.15 oz. (33 grams).
We are not saying any of this piece is gembone, but one side certainly is similar in appearance.
Sauropods were huge
animals that walked on 4 sturdy pillar-like legs. They had very long necks,
small heads, long tails and were plant-eaters. The animal on the Sinclair
gas logo is of a Sauropod.
Apatosaurus is one of
the most popular of the Sauropods, along with such genera as Brontosaurus (yes,
it is a recognized genus again), Brachiosaurus, and Diplodocus For
years, many thought Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus were the same genus, but recent
comparisons have shown Apatosaurus to be much larger, with a thicker, lower set
neck, with some skull differences as well. Named in 1877 by
Charles Marsh, Apatosaurus fossils are found in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah,
Wyoming, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and a few in Montana. Apatosaurus
are in a number of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies.

COMBINED SHIPPING: We make every effort to combine shipping
costs and we refund any overpayment back to you, on the same day we ship the
item. We have given hundreds of partial
refunds for combined shipping savings.
We will do our best to combine purchases to save shipping costs. In some
cases, that is easy, in some cases, not as much. Our items are of vastly different sizes and
weights, but we never use shipping as a profit center. We would rather refund the shipping
overpayment back to you.
We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of
Authenticity). Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them
become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with
fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very
nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen.
A COA should be specific
to one particular specimen, with a photo
of the exact item on it. At Pioneer
Fossils, our fossils and minerals come
with a COA, and each have a photo of the exact
item you just purchased. This assures that the COA can never be
transferred to a different specimen.
