In 1903, the creation of the rotary press revolutionized currency printing at the BEP, and serial numbers were applied using this machine instead of the previously employed paging machines. Prior to the innovation of the star note, in order to indicate a new sheet had been created to replace an error or damaged sheet, the BEP would revert back to applying serial numbers via the paging machine method for the replacement sheet. R. Shawn Hewitt has researched this matter extensively and determined that this type of replacement note can be discerned by the font of the serial numbers, which is distinguishable based upon paging and rotary machine methods of application. These notes are highly collected and always sought after notes in any grade!
