First edition. Inscribed at the head of the title page "Revd. Dr. Nichols / with the respects of / Josiah Quincy." Correcting false statements made by Bancroft in his report concerning the "condition of the seminary and the labors of its Professors." Quincy (1772-1864) served as mayor of Boston, 1823-1828, and President of Harvard, 1829-1846. "Josiah Quincy was a fine example of a cultured and aristocratic public servant" (DAB).
