Background: My mom and I have traveled to Africa for more than 35 years doing missions work for the Jan McCray Ministries. You can find more information about the ministry on the Jan McCray Ministries.org website. These authentic handmade jewelry pieces were given as a gift from one of the Maasai widows that we support in Naikarra. All proceeds go back into the ministry for widow support.
Maasai Bead Work: The tradition of Maasai bead work dates back hundreds of years. It is customary for the women to know how to do beading, and they work on their craft almost every day. The beaded jewelry by the Maasai women represents the strong culture and tradition of the Kenyan tribe.
The colors of the beads are not only chosen because of the beautiful ensembles they make, but also for their symbolic meaning: RED signifies blood, bravery, and unity. WHITE represents health, peace, and purity. BLUE is the color of the sky and represents energy. GREEN is the color of the grass which signifies the land and production. BLACK represents the people and the struggle they must endure. YELLOW symbolizes the sun, fertility, and growth. ORANGE represents warmth, generosity, and friendship.
Description: The necklace hangs 18 inches. The diameter of the bracelet is 2.5 inches. These items were lovingly handmade by one of the widows that our ministry supports in the small village of Naikarra in Kenya, Africa. The jewelry is not perfect and was made with the beads the widow had on hand. They are not mass produced but are one-of-a-kind and hand crafted with care. Jewelry will be shipped in a protective box and will arrive in a drawstring burlap/linen gift bag. LOT #12
