J.C. Leyendecker, one of the most celebrated artists of the Golden Age of American Illustration, captivated the public with his stylish and striking portrayals of handsome men and glamorous women.
His instantly recognizable style—often referred to as the Leyendecker Look—helped shape the very face of America, giving rise to numerous iconic designs that are still familiar today. Through his work, he played a key role in defining brand identity in advertising. Yet, despite his fame, little has been known about the man behind the art.

Called the “master of magazine covers” by Norman Rockwell—who would later regard him as a mentor—Leyendecker created illustrations that graced the covers of nearly every major publication of his time. In advertising, his work ranged from cutting-edge men's fashion to household brands like Ivory Soap and Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.

Perhaps his most famous creation is the Arrow Collar Man, a portrait that became the first male sex symbol in advertising history and was adored by both men and women. This elegant, refined gentleman stirred the hearts of millions and promoted a dazzling lifestyle to an enthusiastic society.

What most people don’t know is that the model for the Arrow Collar Man was Charles Beach—Leyendecker’s lifelong partner. Due to the social scrutiny surrounding homosexuality at the time, Leyendecker kept his personal life private and rarely spoke about it.

This book features over 600 original paintings, photographs, advertisements, and magazine covers, and for the first time, sheds light on many of the lingering mysteries surrounding his life—revealing the true story behind the legendary artist.
