Offered is a woven and quite large round lidded splint ash and sweetgrass basket sewing made by a Native American artist from the Micmac, one of the Northern Indian tribes from New England and Canada. The basket is woven of ash, and the weavers on the lid and sides are crafted of ash splints. The sides of the basket and the edge of the lid are decorated with a series of large decorative split ash twists, which amazingly are all still mostly intact. Very nice! The lid is finished off with a bound ash ring handle. This would have been intended as a basket to hold sewing items.
This attractive artifact will be an outstanding addition to someone's collection. The basket, as noted, is a nice large size for one of these vintage Micmac baskets, measuring 10" across at the lid and 6" deep to the top of the slightly rounded lid. This basket is in very nice condition, with no breaks or missing splints. If you turn the basket upside down you can see a stain on the underside and inside, but this doesn't affect the basket's terrific display quality. I have taken photos of all sides so you can see. A beautiful Micmac!
