Offered for sale is a beautiful antique EAPG glass OVAL PLATTER, made by Gillinder & Sons. The company called this pattern LION.  It features a cable rim, a frosted center medallion (picture 3) and lion-shaped handles (picture 4).  The image on the medallion shows a standing lion, two lion cubs, and a dying lioness shot with an arrow.  The plate dates from appx. 1877.  The design in the center is based on a bronze statue called The Dying Lioness by Wilhelm Wolff (1816 - 1887).  The statue (picture 7) was created in 1873.  It was displayed at the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exhibition, where it apparently inspired P.J. Jacobus, who was the mold maker for Gillinder at the time.

The platter measures 12 3/4 inches (32.4cm) long from handle to handle, and 9 inches (22.9cm) wide.  A U.S. quarter is shown in the second picture, to give an accurate impression of the size at a glance.

It is in excellent condition with no cracks, scratches or repairs. There is no discoloration or cloudiness in the glass.  A few tiny chips/roughness are visible (pictures 5 and 6).
