Chevrolet’s Advance-Design (AD) light and medium duty pickup trucks launched the 1947 Chevy truck model with much fanfare. These post-war trucks were very popular when new, becoming the best-selling truck every year that it was in production. Powered by an inline six and either manual or automatic transmission, you could find them in quarter, half, and one-ton models in both standard and short bed derivatives, and the design was even used for the Suburban and panel truck variants.
Today this generation full size Chevrolet pickup (and it’s GMC variant) are popular for all manner of builds, from stock-style restos to LS swapped “restomods,” and more. The AD’s dash originally featured a fixed steering column with a standard 18-inch Chevy truck steering wheel, flanked by a pair of large round instruments. This dash styling has complimented the exterior design very well, however, as owners have upgraded their trucks with GM tilt columns from the salvage yard, or Shop 1947-1954 GM Truck Tilt Columns, the aftermarket steering wheels for Chevy trucks with these columns weren’t always a great fit visually. We think the original classic chevy steering wheel has great styling and goes extremely well with the dashboard, so why not keep it but make it work with these columns? This led us to design our 15-inch AD series Chevy truck steering wheel you see here.
We created this all new classic chevy steering wheel for the 1947-1954 AD series pickups to provide that great period look but in a smaller 15-inch diameter that pairs well with trucks that have been upgraded with power steering where that larger 18-inch wheel’s leverage is excessive. Knowing how popular a tilt steering column upgrade is, we designed our new aftermarket Chevy steering wheel with a standard 1969-1994 GM center spline to easily mount to your GM tilt column or aftermarket tilt column without the need for a steering wheel hub adapter.
Not all reproduction vintage steering wheels are made the same. Just like the original 1947 Chevy truck steering wheel (only with a smaller diameter) our wheel features a welded steel steering wheel core and spokes for strength that is then placed in an accurate mold of the original wheel’s design and molded with OE like satin black polymer materials. The scaled down aftermarket Chevy steering wheel design is so accurate it even allows the use of your original or reproduction 1947-1954 GM Truck Horn Contact Plate and 1947-1954 GM Truck Horn Center Cap for that perfectly correct look, but with the preferred diameter for easier ingress/egress of the cab and steering control with power assist. The rear of the steering wheel has been formed to match the column diameter for a seamless factory appearance.
No matter if you’re considering upgrading to a 1947-1954 GM Truck Power Steering Conversion or perhaps a full 1947-1954 GM Truck Mustang II-Style Front Suspension Kit with power rack-and-pinion steering, this new AD series 15-inch steering wheel is the perfect compliment to the tilt column you plan to use compared to any other aftermarket steering wheels for Chevy trucks.
