ANTIQUE AFRICAN ASHANTI AKAN GEOMETRIC GOLD WEIGHT 1400-1720 AD Brass 33.8g 32x20.8mm.
Akan goldweights are cast brass weights made using the ancient lost-wax technique. They were used as a standardized measuring system by the Akan people of West Africa, particularly in trade.
Stylistic studies of goldweights help establish relative dates, dividing them into two broad periods: Early (circa 1400–1720 AD) and Late (1700–1900 AD), with some overlap. The two periods show distinct differences. Geometric weights, the earliest form, date back to around 1400 AD. Figurative weights—depicting people, animals, buildings, and other objects—first emerged around 1600 AD.
