First edition.

With a frontispiece to each volume.

A collection of essays and short stories collected from papers given to the joint care of Thomas Carlyle and Julius Charles Hare on the event of the authors death.

Volume one contains: Shades of the Dead, a collection of essays on important figures in history; Critical essays on various subjects; and a lecture on the worth of knowledge.

Volume two contains: Fragments from the Travels of Theodore Elbert, Thoughts, and Tales and Apologues.

Written by John Sterling, a Scottish author.

Collected and edited with a memoir of his life by Julius Charles Hare, an English theological writer.


CONDITION

Bound in half crushed morocco with marbled boards. Externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light spotting to the endpapers. Previous owners' bookplates to the front pastedown and endpaper.
