DESCRIPTION

'The Travels and Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen' is an entertaining novel following the amazing adventures of eighteenth century German nobleman, Baron Munchausen.

This edition, illustrated by George Cruikshank, was first published in 1867.

On his wild adventures the Baron meets the Sultan at the Turkish royal court, steals his whole treasury, and sets sail away from Turkey.

This fictional account of Munchausen was written by Rudolf Erich Raspe.

Illustrated with a hand coloured frontispiece, two double page plates, and nineteen further plates.

Collated, complete.

With a former owner's inscription, dated 1874, to the front free endpaper.

The protagonist is loosely based on the real Baron Munchausen, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von Münchhausen, who served as a page to Duke Anthony Ulrich of Brunswick during the Russo-Turkish War of 1737 to 1739. He was known for his brilliant storytelling abilities, and highly exaggerated and witty accounts of his military career in Russia.
