At the time of the incident, the AZ-5 was started by the KE-011 button, not by the MXI switcher.

After the incident in 1986, the first modifications were:
- AZ-5 button was replaced by the MXI switcher;
- the new AZ-5 switcher had a forced signal memorization for 45 seconds. This means that if you turn the switch to the active mode and then immediately return it, the rods still go into the zone.
