Antique French Provincial oak panel, decorated with hand-carved wheatsheaf motif. Original, varnished oak finish re-presented with the addition of Frenchic & Grand Illusions authentic chalk paints, peinture du lait. Late 19th c.

This elegant recent arrival comes to us via a reliable French dealer based in Normandy. Although sourced in its original, dark oak state, its elegant hand-crafted carving has since been embellished with the addition of a more contemporary two-tone grey and vanilla colour palette.

Emulating the buttermilk paints of the 18th c., and perhaps better known today as chalk paint, these eco-friendly water-based paints contain some 46% chalk. This chalky, matt, breathable finish, produced by both  Frenchic and Grand Illusions considered perfect for ageing and distressing furniture.

19th c. panels of this type are increasingly being transformed for the 21st c., adding a French château, architecturally sculpted look to contemporary spaces. This is admirably demonstrated at the Les 3 Lieux hotel, Les Ponts-de-Cé, in the Loire Valley. LAST FOUR IMAGES. The French Provincial blend of Rococo, rustic and French countryside imbuing the hotel reception with an air of elegance.

This panel would look impressive hung in a Farrow & Balled interior as a work of art. Which, of course, it is.
