In the summer of 283, Numerian assumed the throne following his father Carus, amid a conflict with the Sāsānians. At that time, Numerian held the position of emperor in the East, while his brother Carinus governed the West. Despite leading the army back home, Numerian fell ill with a debilitating eye disease. In the latter part of 284, upon reaching the Bosporus, Numerian was discovered lifeless in the imperial coach.
