By October, 1997, Target will operate a total of 804 stores in over 39 states from coast to coast. To celebrate, we bring the spotlight on our very own, designed just for Target, 35th Anniversary Barbie!

Target and Mattel Together Through the Years
1959 - Barbie doll is introduced and 351,000 are sold at an original retail of $3.
1962 - Target opens its first store in Roseville, Minnesota.
1965 - Barbie doll's careers include astronaut, fashion editor and student teacher.
1969 - Target offers its own brand of potato chips.
1970 - Target is now operating in Minnesota, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. We also began testing electronic cash registers!
1973 - Target is among the first U.S. retailers to establish our own toy safety campaign and safety-testing program.
1978 - First Target opens in a shopping mall.
1987 - Electronic scanning comes to Target.
1989 - Gold 'n Lace Barbie is the first Barbie created exclusively for Target.
1992 - Totally HairĀ® Barbie becomes the most successful Barbie doll ever, with over 10 million sold worldwide.
1994 - First multi-level Target store opens in Pasadena, California.
1994 - Close to one billion Barbie dolls and family members have been sold since 1959 with an average doll retail price of $10.
1995 - First Super Target opens in Omaha, combining grocery, general merchandise and special services.
1995 - An average of one and one-half million Barbie dolls were sold per week.
1996 - Target announces partnership with National Park Foundation to restore the Washington Monument.
1 1997 - Barbie celebrates her 38th anniversary as the world's best-selling fashion doll
