Form the Jurassic, the middle age of the Dinosaurs, about 150 million years ago. It is a large piece, measuring about 7.6 inches at its longest measurement, diagonally.  It weighs 1 lb. 13.6 oz.  It is pretty flat with a bit of curvature.

By all probabilities it is part of a leg bone from a Camarasaurus.

Camarasaurus is by far the most common sauropod to be found in eastern Utah. So this is likely (but not certain) to be from a Camarasaurus, because of the number of them found here. Utah was also home to the following sauropods: Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, and Barosaurus. All were giants, the Camarasaurus was actually one of the smaller ones at 50 feet and 25 tons.

Dinosaur bones are excavated from very hard rock, and they are usually excavated in parts and then glued together. This piece is one single piece, it was not glued together.

We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity).  Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact item on the COA itself,  is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral.  We suggest that instead of relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
