This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 14th Conference on African Linguistics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, on April 7 - 10, 1983.

It covers a wide range of languages from different families and from different parts of the continent, with emphasis on points of crucial importance for current theories of language structure.  In this way it reflects the vital role which Africa plays as a rich laboratory for linguistic theory, especially in the areas of phonology and syntax.
