SEE RESEARCH BELOW! VERY RARE VINTAGE ANTIQUE (1 of 100,000 First American Printings*) 1929 Book-of-the-Month Club Printing with Original Dust Jacket AND Book-of-the-Month Club Insert. This insert makes this book more rare than a signed copy!
Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front is considered by many to be the most influential fictional novel about World War I. As of 1975, over 3.4 million copies had been sold in the United States and it continues to be taught down to this day in high school and college curriculum. This copy is rare and unique as it is from the original printing in the United States and contains a special, original, insert.
According to research, publisher Little, Brown, and Company won the rights to publish All Quiet on the Western Front in the United States. Immediately, Book-of-the-Month Club selected the novel unanimously for distribution to its 100,000 members. As noted on the dust jacket, 1st printing included 100,000 copies, so where did those copies go? First distribution was in June 1929 to the 60,000 members who selected it on their order form. Little, Brown then distributed the remaining 40,000 through its regular channels. Between June 1929 and December 1929, a mere six months, the 1929 All Quiet on the Western Front ran through at least seventeen printings with Little, Brown and its associated publishers.
To have been among the original 60,000 distributed in the US and survived nearly 100 years with the Book-of-the-Month Club insert intact in such good condition is very rare and unique. No copy, with this extremely rare insert, is currently for sale online domestically or internationally that we can find.
Condition:
Very Good book in a good jacket. The jacket, the the original price intact, has been recently put in a mylar sleeve (photos show the jacket in and out of the sleeve) and has some chips along the edges with a small section missing from the top upper edge.
The book itself is completely unmarked and without moisture, creases, foxing, mildew, edge wear, bumped corners and has all the characteristics of a book that falls into very good condition. There is some typical ungluing under the spine bridge and all text remains tight to the text block and functions excellent. The insert is in fine condition as well.
