The Most Complete English Translation
In September, 1901, Dmitri Merezhkovsky gave Herbert Trench the exclusive right to prepare an English translation of his superb historical novel -The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci. Trench did a notable work and his version achieved world-wide fame. But he omitted nearly one-fifth of the original. For this edition, Morris S. Gurin and Helen Gourin have translated and restored all the missing material, with the exception of a very small amount of archaic Russian. The result is the most complete translation ever to appear in the English language.
The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci is a dazzling pageant of Italy during the Renaissance. Towering above the popes and princes, the creative geniuses and insatiable courtiers, is the commanding figure of Leonardo. His struggle to reconcile the fierce conflict between
Christian and pagan elements in himself mirrors the spiritual battlefield of the Renaissance.
