The first edition of this work, which examines the topography of Hampshire, its Roman history, Jane Austen's country and Gilbert White's country, Winchester, the New Forest, the Avon Valley and Portsmouth, amongst other areas. 

Written by Rev. Telford Varley. 

With seventy-five paintings in colour throughout by Wilfrid Ball, a painter of landscapes, known particularly for his depictions of the home counties. This is one of only two books published by Ball, the other covering Sussex.

Bound in the publisher's original decorative cloth. 

With the ownership inscription of Margaret Will to the front endpaper.

In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; slightly bumped to the head of the spine and extremities. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are just a little age-toned to the edges.
