This early gold scale could have been used in the California Gold Rush of 1848 , Herny Troemner  immigrated to the United Sates in 1832 and in 1843 he lived in Philadelphia ,which is what is stamped on all five of the gold washed five weights. Thoemner was commissioned by the UNITED STATES MINT , in Philadelphia to make their balances, which he did so well that he was invited to make the bullion balances for the DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY. He later made scales for the MEXICAN MINT,ASSAY OFFICE IN NEW YORK, AND SAN FRANCISCO MINT. ACCORD TO Ernest child,Troemner was probably the first American manufacturer to follow  the French mathematician Gilles Personne de Roberval's balance design. This is distinguished by the load being superimposed on the beam ,rather than suspended from the beam, allowed faster weighings. This dark blue case has a purple velvet lining , with an early ,backward looking eagle , with arrows in its' claws. The hand held balance has dark green cords holding the brass trays, with five diffrent weights with H. TROEMNER ,PHIL.  Drachmas , the lach works fine on the front.
