Since ancient times,

the owl and the olive branch have been

the Athenian currency to spread the values

of the city’s patroness, Athena, whose virtue represents

victory, peace, and wisdom.

The Roman Owl

New style Owls were minted under increasing Roman

domination of Greece.  Roman Owls retain the Athena

and owl iconography of earlier Owls,

but it has become considerably more elaborate.

On the obverse side, the owl now sits on an

amphora ( oil jug ), which refers to Athen’s international

olive oil trade, and is surrounded by an olive wreath.

Roman Goddess of war, with the classic crested

Roman helmet, appearing victorious.

President Theodore Roosevelt used a Classical Owl

as a pocket piece, which inspired him to order the

redesign of U.S. coins early last century.

With 18 inch chain, it weights 19.60 grams.
