Why is Cleaning Important?
All
espresso machines share the same basic approach to making coffee. They
percolate hot water under pressure through tightly packed roasted
ground coffee beans to extract the flavoursome and fragrant brew known
as ‘espresso coffee’.
This process leaves behind a ‘cake’ of used grounds that are easily disposed of. However, some of these grounds will remain in your machine, along with sticky coffee oils which will eventually block the filters and become rancid.
The result will be bitter coffee lacking flavour and a steady reduction in the effectiveness and reliability of your machine.
Why is Descaling Important?
Naturally Occurring Elements that cause Hard Water Scale
Many areas of Australia have high levels of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate in the water which becomes a scale 'crust' on surfaces when water is heated. As calcium and magnesium carbonate are soluble and do not affect the colour or appearance of water, they cannot be removed by filtration.
Scale occurs on the boiler, the heating element, and the pipe and jet network in an espresso machine, and affects machine performance eventually machine failure if not treated.
Descaling or Decalcification
Once scale has
formed in the boiler and pipe network it can only be removed by the use
of special acidic descaling chemicals. Espresso machine cleaners are
alkaline they will have no impact on scale removal.
There are a variety of descalers available in the market place. Many of these products are dangerous to use and can be very corrosive to some metals. Many domestic coffee machines use aluminium thermo-blocks which are very susceptible to corrosive acids.

Cafetto RESTORE Organic Descaler
Cafetto Restore is a high performance descaler that is safe for the user, the equipment and the environment.
Restore
is non-toxic and ideal to safely descale (decalcify) boilers, heating
elements, brewers, thermoblocks, kettles, spray heads, faucets, taps and
other brewing and water heating equipment.

• Restore has been assessed and registered by Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA) as an allowed input suitable for use in organic systems.

Usage Instructions
• Add contents of sachet to 1 litre of warm water, dissolve, and then pour into water tank.
• Remove filter holder and turn machine on.
• Place cup under brew spout and run out about 1 cup of the descaling solution. Run about ¼ cup out through the steam arm. (For super-automatic machines run all the solution through the steam wand and set on hot water not the steam setting).
• Allow to stand for 15 minutes, and then repeat the process. Repeat the entire process until all the solution is used up.
• Rinse thoroughly by flushing one tank of
clean fresh water through the system exiting through the brew head and
the steam wand.

espresso machine cleaners that have been evaluated, tested, and passed
NSF’s stringent toxicology and corrosivity standards. The ingredients
and formulation of the products that are NSF certified are safe, leave
no harmful residues and do not cause corrosion within the coffee
machine.
