DESCRIPTION

In the original French.

To this work, Brosses provides a materialistic theory of philology. He discusses the origin and evolution of language, where the meaning of words are regarded as an image of the physiological articularion of sounds. It is an important work, and inspired Condillac's 'Grammaire'.

This study of language is regarded as a cornerstone to the founding of language as a scientific concept.

With half-titles to both volumes.

Collated, complete with nine plates, one folding.

A pioneering study of the origins of language.
