A sixteenth-century antiquarian and politician, William Lambarde was a writer on legal subjects. He was accepted to Lincoln's Inn, one of the four Inns of Court of London. Eirenarcha being an antiquated word for 'justice of the peace', this publication was a manual for the contemporary constables - a precursor to our modern policing system - and became the standard work on the subject.
