	ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Extremely Rare Antique Mid 18th Century 1752 Hand-Colored Double-Page French Map of what is now Spain titled “Partie Septentrionale de la Couronne de Castille où se trouvent Les Royaumes de Castille Vielle de Leon, de Gallice, des Asturies, la Biscaye et la Navarre, en Partie. Par le Sr Robert de Vaugondy fils Géographe ordin? Du Roi. Acec Privilege 1752”. The cartographer was Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766), with help from his son Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786). From the best of my research it was published in the Atlas Universel, Par M. Robert Geographe ordinaire du Roy, et Par M. Robert De Vaugondy son fils Geographe ord. du Roy, et de S. M. Polonoise, Duc de Lorraine et de Bar, et Associe de L'Academie Royale des Sciences et belles Lettres de Nancy, Avec Privilege Du Roy, 1757. A Paris, Chez Les Auteurs ,Quay de l'Horloge du Palais, Boudet Libraire Imprimeur du Roi, rue St. Jacques. Grave par Ch. Baquoy. J. Oger Scripsit... This atlas was reissued until 1799 (Phillips), with later issues having a map of the United States. Originally published in original half leather patterned paper covered boards with spine reading “Nouvel Atlas De Mrs. Robert.” One of the first atlases based on scientific surveys, in the tradition of D'Anville and De L'Isle. Outlines in color. ‘Castille Septent.ale 75’ printed on back, on beautiful hand-made heavy-weight cream-colored laid paper with watermark, ‘C RICHARD FIN AUGERGNE 1742 (dated), for papermaker Claude Richard (1682-1757) La Boule-sur-Forie near Ambert, son of Benoît (vers 1648-1710) and Antoinette Gourbeyre; married Jeanne Chantelemerle; mill Le Prat, La Boule-sur-Forie near Ambeart in géneralité Riom; Gaudriault p.261. Various papers were used to include: BVLE (which is BULLE), the category of lowest quality paper, and the other two categories are “MOYEN” and “FIN” (Some of the above info from davidrumsey) The Map is Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique 263+ year old age with absolutely no color fade. The size with wide margins is 21-3/4” x 29-15/16”, Image size is 18-3/4” x 23-1/8”. Only three very tiny outer margin edge tears (1/8”, 1/8” & 1/4”) which are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out (two on bottom edge left & one top edge left). The center fold is still well intact with no tears or cracking. Minimal slight small foxing specks here & there on the sheet which aren’t too noticeable at all. Slight normal toning of the stock from age and a little more so around the outer margin edges. Extremely minimal & very slight moisture staining in the upper right outer margin corner area which isn’t too noticeable and is also negligible. Slight small crescent-creasing here & there on the sheet, as well as a few other light vertical creases and a few little more pronounced diagonal creases in the lower left outer margin area which barely extends into the image border area by about 2-1/4”. There is a little of the red (aquatint more than likely) hand-painted color offset in the left image area near the word ‘Grand’ and also upper right below word ‘Gascogne’ from where it was applied on the opposite page(s) and subsequently folded to create the faint linework offset when it was still a touch wet when first applied perhaps….it is what it is….Extremely minimal outer margin edge wear with some dents & dings here & there—also negligible. This beautiful antique mid 18th C. map would make a wonderful addition to any cartography or art collection, and has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
