Description: Emile Zola was a French novelist and exponent of Naturalism, as well as a noted political liberal. Half of Zola's novels were a set of twenty called Les Rougon-Macquart, set in France's Second Empire. It traces two branches of a single family over a period of generations. Abbe Mouret's Transgression is a novel in the series. Serge Mouret is ordained to the priesthood and appointed Cure of Les Artaud, a squalid village in Provence, to whose degenerate inhabitants he ministers. When a brain fever leaves the priest an amnesiac, his uncle removes him from his accustomed surroundings and leaves him at the Paradou, the neglected demesne of a ruined mansion-house near Les Artaud, where he is nursed by Albine, niece of the caretaker. The Abbe falls in love with Albine and, oblivious of his vows, breaks them. The harshness of church discipline rules in the end, and Serge abandons the love of his lie and returns to his hard master, his God.

Condition: This vintage book is over one hundred years old and in overall good condition. It has stamps and stickers associated with being a library book. There is wear to the edges/corners of the leather (see picture), but the gilt is still bright. The inside pages have tanned due to aging and are in good condition for the early 1900s. No ripped, loose or missing pages. No bent corners, no writing or highlighting. The vintage binding is secure. The page edges are gilt.
