Description
Key Features
Nikon Reflex-Nikkor 500mm f/8 — Mirror Super Telephoto
The Nikon Reflex-Nikkor 500mm f/8 is a catadioptric (mirror) super telephoto lens offering a 500mm focal length in a compact, lightweight body compared to conventional telephoto lenses of equivalent reach. As a genuine Nikon-produced mirror lens, it represents the optical standard of the Nikkor lineup applied to the catadioptric design.
Catadioptric Design
The Reflex-Nikkor employs a folded mirror design that bounces light internally to achieve a long focal length within a short physical barrel. This results in a significantly more compact and lighter lens than a conventional 500mm telephoto, making it practical for handheld use and travel where a full-size 500mm would be impractical.
Fixed f/8 Aperture
Mirror lenses have no adjustable aperture — the f/8 opening is fixed. Exposure is controlled through shutter speed and film speed selection. Neutral density filters are commonly used in bright conditions to maintain appropriate exposure.
Donut Bokeh
Out-of-focus highlights rendered by mirror lenses produce a characteristic ring-shaped bokeh — a result of the central mirror obstruction. This is a well-known optical characteristic of all catadioptric designs and is considered part of the aesthetic of mirror lens photography.
Nikon F Mount Compatibility
Compatible with Nikon F mount bodies. As a non-Ai lens depending on the version, metering compatibility varies by body — confirm coupling method for the specific body intended for use.
