A charming and highly distinctive Victorian Gothic Revival fireplace surround, dating to circa 1870, beautifully carved from Grinshill stone, a fine-grained sandstone quarried in north Shropshire.
The design is a particularly appealing example of the Victorian Gothic Revival style, combining bold architectural forms with restrained decorative detailing. The shaped opening features an unusual double-curved, cusped profile, rising to a subtle central point beneath the broad, plain frieze. To either side are deeply recessed circular quatrefoils, framed by moulded borders. Above, a generously proportioned mantel shelf with a simple rounded moulding is supported by a pair of substantial, boldly carved corbels. The upright jambs are relatively understated, with chamfered edges.
The stone displays a wonderfully subtle and attractive natural colouration, predominantly pale cream and warm beige, with delicate undertones of pink, and soft purple. These gentle variations in tone, together with the natural markings and character of the sandstone, lend the fireplace a warmth and individuality.
Grinshill stone, quarried near the village of Grinshill in north Shropshire, has a long history of use in fine architectural and decorative stonework. Prized for its relatively fine texture, workability and attractive natural colouring, it was particularly well suited to the elaborate carving fashionable during the Victorian Gothic Revival.
The fireplace retains the natural character of its original stone, with subtle surface variations, light discolouration and gentle signs of age consistent with its considerable age and history.
